Safe Liposuction

The liposuction session at the 2nd annual meeting of the World Academy of Cosmetic Surgery features as star guest:

jeffrey_kleinJeffrey Klein, MD

who re-defined liposuction surgery. Dr. Jeffrey Klein is a dermatologic surgeon practicing in San Juan Capistrano and Newport Beach in Orange County, California. In addition to board certification by the American Boards of Dermatology, Internal Medicine, and Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Klein has completed a National Institute of Health Research Fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology, as well as advanced degrees in mathematics and biostatistics. As a result of his unique scientific training, he was able to invent the technique for tumescent local anaesthesia and tumescent liposuction totally by local anaesthesia. Dr. Klein first described the tumescent technique for liposuction at a scientific meeting in 1986 and published his results in the Journal of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery in 1987. Prior to 1986, all liposuction surgeries were done under general anaesthesia, were associated with significant surgical blood loss and prolonged post-operative recovery of two or more weeks. The advent of tumescent liposuction permitted liposuction to be done totally by local anaesthesia with virtually no blood loss. Today tumescent liposuction continues to be the world's safest and most comfortable form of liposuction with the quickest recovery.

Fat and Stem cells

Liposuction Fat has proven to be an excellent source of stem cells in particular mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), which is the current standard for stem cell supported fat transfer and soft tissue engineering.

As a future tool also reprogrammed cells, called induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS cells could be used, which, are capable of turning into most types of cells in the body. So far iPS could also be derived most efficiently from adipose derived MSC.

Scientists are keen to obtain these cells to study disease and, one day, use them to grow new tissue and even replace organs. Fat is continuously becoming a favoured source of stem cells. The implications are not only medical; the aesthetic aspects of fat will be presented in this scientific session.

Prof. Heinz Redl

Leading of the session: Prof. Heinz Redl

Director of Ludwig Boltzmann Institute forExperimental und Clinical Traumatologyand coordinator of the Austrian Cluster for Tissue Regeneration with the primary goal toimprove diagnostic and therapeutic measures in trauma care specifically in the area of intensive care and tissue regeneration

One approach in tissue reconstruction is to accelerate wound healing by means of growth factors or special wound dressings. Another of use is stem cells from various sources, such as bone marrow, fatty tissues, placenta and umbilical cords. Potential applications are in the Central Nervous System (CNS), Peripheral Nervous System, Cartilage/Tendon Regeneration, Hemostasis/Soft Tissue Therapy, and Bone regeneration.

Heinz Redl is internationally one of the foremost capacities in tissue engineering and will present the science required in this often chaotic field.
